The name is Finnish in origin, derived from a prefix suggesting precedence and from silmukka, meaning loop or coil, a reference to the plant’s distinctive curled structures. In traditional tales, the term is used both for the plant itself and for the symbolic loops that appear in its buds.

Forsilmukkaa is described as a small evergreen shrub, typically reaching 30 to 60 centimeters in height. The leaves are narrow and bluish-green with a silvery underside.
