Forpakninger

Forpakninger is a term used in Danish and Norwegian contexts to describe the outer packaging used to enclose and protect goods during handling, storage, and transport. It covers the outer layer that shields inner packaging and contents from damage, moisture, and contamination. The concept is often contrasted with inner packaging, which sits inside the outer carton.

Functions of forpakninger include protection against physical impact, moisture, dust, and contamination; facilitation of handling, stacking, and unitization; and provision of space for labeling, branding, and product information. Outer packaging also supports efficient logistics, enabling automated packing, palletization, and safe storage.

Common types of forpakninger include corrugated cardboard boxes, folding cartons, trays and crates, pallets, plastic wraps or films, straps, and protective inserts such as foam or air pillows. In many cases, multi-wall packaging or composite materials are used to balance protection with weight and cost, while meeting specific handling requirements.

Materials and sustainability considerations are central to modern forpakninger. Paper and cardboard remain prevalent due to recyclability, while plastics provide moisture resistance and tamper-evidence. Wood and metal are used for durable or heavy items. Sustainable practices emphasize lightweight and material efficiency, recyclability and reusability, and adherence to packaging waste directives and circular economy principles.

Regulatory and design considerations include ensuring sufficient strength and integrity under expected handling and transport conditions, including shock, compression, and vibration tests; using clear labeling and handling icons; and complying with applicable packaging regulations, such as waste directives and hazard communications for certain goods.
