Foreuses

Foreuses are drilling machines used to create holes in a variety of materials, including rock, concrete, metal, and earth. They range from portable hand-held devices to large, stationary rigs. The common principle is a rotating drill bit that cuts material as the tool advances into the workpiece, sometimes combined with percussive action to break up hard material. Some foreuses provide continuous rotation; others are specialized for percussion or mixed modes. Power sources vary: electricity, compressed air, diesel hydraulic systems, or combinations. The cutting head is mounted on a spindle or drill chuck, with a feed mechanism to advance the bit and control depth. Cooling and lubrication systems are often used to reduce heat and wear.

Categories include handheld drills (cordless or corded), compact bench or column drills, magnetic or floor-standing drilling rigs for construction and metalworking, and heavy-duty underground or surface drilling rigs used in mining and civil works. In mining and quarrying, foreuses bore blast holes or core samples, with precise depth, angle, and spacing. In construction, they are used for anchor bolts, micropiles, pilot holes for equipment, and drilling into reinforced concrete or rock.

Safety and maintenance are essential: operators follow PPE requirements and machine guards; regular inspection of bits, spindles, belts, and lubrication; checking for wear, alignment, and stuck bits. Proper drill selection, feed rate, and torque help minimize tool wear and ensure hole quality.
