Foretrusted is a term used in discussions of trust, access control, and governance to describe actors, devices, or credentials that are granted trust by default within a defined context. In practice, foretrust implies that certain entities may bypass or shorten standard verification steps because an established relationship, provenance, or policy framework occupies the role of trust baseline. The concept sits alongside models such as zero trust, which emphasize minimal inherent trust.

Formed from the prefix fore- meaning before and trusted, the coinage aims to capture pre-established trust relationships that permit certain actions earlier than ordinary verification would require. As a concept, it is used more in policy discussions and informal security literature than in formal standards, and its exact definition can vary between organizations.

In practice, foretrusted arrangements appear in several contexts. In supply chains, foretrusted partners may receive faster onboarding and access to systems. In identity and access management, foretrusted roles may have elevated privileges granted under policy rather than dynamic risk checks. In data sharing, foretrusted data sources may be integrated with reduced consent friction when provenance and governance controls are clearly documented.

The term is not widely standardized, and interpretations differ. Critics warn that foretrusted arrangements can create blind spots, increase the blast radius if a trusted actor is compromised, and complicate accountability. Proponents argue that, when governed with explicit policies, time-bound trust, revocation mechanisms, and ongoing risk assessment, foretrusted relationships can streamline legitimate workflows without sacrificing security.
