Fordonschassit, often referred to as the chassis, is the fundamental structural framework of a motor vehicle. It serves as the backbone, supporting the vehicle's body, powertrain, suspension, and other essential components. The chassis provides the necessary rigidity and strength to withstand the stresses and strains of driving, acceleration, braking, and cornering.

Historically, the dominant chassis design was the separate chassis, also known as body-on-frame construction. In this arrangement, a rigid frame, typically made of steel beams, is constructed independently. The vehicle's body is then bolted onto this frame. This design is robust and well-suited for heavy-duty applications like trucks and SUVs, offering excellent towing and load-carrying capabilities.

However, modern passenger cars predominantly utilize a unibody or monocoque chassis. In this integrated design, the body and chassis are manufactured as a single, cohesive unit. Stamped metal panels are welded together to create a strong and lightweight structure. This approach generally leads to improved fuel efficiency, better handling characteristics due to a lower center of gravity, and enhanced safety in crash situations through controlled deformation.

Regardless of the specific type, the chassis's primary functions remain consistent: to provide structural integrity, support all vehicle components, and ensure safe and stable operation. Its design is a critical factor influencing a vehicle's performance, durability, and overall driving experience.
