Chassis refers to the structural framework of a vehicle or other mechanical system. It provides the main support for all other components, such as the engine, drivetrain, suspension, and body. The design of a chassis is crucial for a vehicle's performance, handling, safety, and overall integrity.

There are several common types of chassis designs. The ladder chassis, one of the oldest and simplest, consists of two parallel beams connected by crossmembers, resembling a ladder. It is often used in trucks and heavy-duty vehicles due to its strength and rigidity. Another common type is the unibody or monocoque chassis, where the body and frame are integrated into a single structure. This design is prevalent in passenger cars, offering a good balance of strength, weight, and manufacturing efficiency. Space frames, composed of a network of tubes or bars, provide a strong yet lightweight structure and are often found in high-performance sports cars and racing vehicles. Backbone chassis utilize a single central beam or channel to connect the front and rear axles, a design seen in some older cars and specialized vehicles.

The materials used in chassis construction also vary. Steel is a common and cost-effective material, offering good strength and durability. Aluminum is lighter than steel, which can improve fuel efficiency and performance, but it is generally more expensive. Advanced composites, such as carbon fiber, are exceptionally lightweight and strong but come at a premium cost, typically reserved for high-end performance applications. The choice of chassis design and materials significantly impacts the vehicle's characteristics.
