Fokussteuerung, also known as focus control, refers to the process of adjusting the optical elements of a camera or other optical instrument to achieve a sharp image. This is typically accomplished by moving a lens or a mirror closer to or further away from the image sensor or film plane. The goal is to ensure that light rays from the subject converge precisely on the focal plane, resulting in a clear and detailed image.

There are several methods for achieving fokussteuerung. Manual focus allows the user to directly adjust the lens by hand, often using a rotating ring. This method offers precise control and is favored by many photographers for its tactile feedback and artistic possibilities. Automatic focus, or autofocus, uses electronic systems to detect the subject and adjust the lens accordingly. Modern autofocus systems employ various technologies, including phase detection and contrast detection, to achieve rapid and accurate focusing.

The distance at which an optical system is in focus is known as the focal distance. Different lenses have different focal lengths, which affects their field of view and magnification. Proper fokussteuerung is crucial for capturing well-defined images, especially when dealing with subjects at varying distances or in low-light conditions. When focus is not properly adjusted, the image will appear blurred or out of focus, a phenomenon commonly referred to as motion blur or depth of field issues.
