Fogplattformar, often translated as fog computing platforms, represent a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. This approach contrasts with traditional cloud computing, where data is sent to a centralized cloud for processing. Fog computing aims to reduce latency, conserve bandwidth, and enhance responsiveness by decentralizing these functions.

These platforms are designed to manage and orchestrate a network of edge devices, gateways, and local servers. They act as an intermediate layer between end devices, such as IoT sensors and actuators, and the cloud. Key functionalities of fog platforms include data filtering, aggregation, pre-processing, and local decision-making. This allows for faster responses to critical events without the need for round-trip communication to a distant cloud server.

The architecture of a fog platform typically involves several layers. At the bottom are the end devices generating data. Above them are the fog nodes, which can be routers, switches, or dedicated servers. These nodes perform local processing. Finally, the cloud serves as a repository for long-term storage, complex analytics, and overarching management.

Fog platforms are particularly beneficial in applications requiring real-time data analysis and immediate action, such as industrial automation, smart grids, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare monitoring. By distributing intelligence closer to the data source, they enable more efficient and reliable operation of these systems, addressing limitations in bandwidth and network connectivity.
