Flügelmanometer

A Flügelmanometer is a mechanical pressure-measuring instrument that uses a pivoted vane or "wing" element to indicate pressure or differential pressure. The device converts a fluid pressure force acting on the vane into a rotary or linear displacement, which is mechanically linked to an indicator scale. The name derives from the German words for "wing" (Flügel) and "manometer" (pressure gauge).

Construction and operation are generally simple: a lightweight vane is mounted on a shaft within a chamber open to the measured pressure; pressure-induced forces cause the vane to deflect, and that motion is transmitted to a dial or pointer via gearing or a linkage. Some designs enclose the vane in a sealed housing with one or more ports to measure static or differential pressures. Materials and vane geometry are selected to balance sensitivity, range, and resistance to flow-induced wear.

Flügelmanometers are used where low-cost, robust, and direct mechanical indication of low pressures or small pressure differences is required. Applications can include laboratory work, ventilation and HVAC checks, and certain industrial process tasks. Advantages include simplicity, no need for electrical power, and immediate visual feedback. Limitations include limited accuracy and range compared with electronic transducers, sensitivity to vibration and mounting orientation, and potential wear of moving parts.

Maintenance typically involves periodic inspection, cleaning of the vane and bearings, and calibration against a reference standard. Where higher precision or remote monitoring is needed, electronic pressure sensors are often preferred.
