Fluorgase

Fluorgase is a synthetic fluorocarbon gas mixture developed for industrial use as a refrigerant and solvent in fluorination processes. The name derives from its primary component, tetrafluoroethylene (C₂F₄), combined with small amounts of perfluorohexane (C₆F₁₄) and perfluorobutane (C₄F₁₀). Fluorgase’s chemical composition gives it low density, high thermal stability, and negligible flammability, making it suitable for high‑pressure reactors where conventional hydrocarbon solvents would pose safety risks.

The product was first announced by the chemical research division of the German firm FluoroTech AG in 2011. Subsequent patents granted in 2013 and 2015 covered improved purity standards and a novel recovery system that reduces environmental release. Fluorgase quickly gained attention in the pharmaceutical industry for its ability to facilitate selective fluorination of organic molecules, a key step in producing many modern drug candidates. In agriculture, it has been used sparingly as a fumigant to control soilborne mold pathogens, offering an alternative to organophosphate compounds.

Handling of Fluorgase is regulated by the Hazardous Substances and New Organics Regulations (HSNO). Because of its low vapor pressure at ambient temperatures, exposure risk is minimal when stored in sealed containers; however, in the event of a rupture, the gas can displace oxygen and create asphyxiation hazards. Standard safety protocols require the use of personal protective equipment, proper ventilation, and trained technicians during transfer and application.

Research into the long‑term environmental impact of Fluorgase is ongoing. While it is not classified as a persistent organic pollutant, experts monitor its potential contribution to greenhouse gas inventories. In 2024 the International Council on Greenhouse Gas Management added Fluorgase to a recommended list of low‑impact fluorinated refrigerants, citing its low global warming potential compared to older Class 1 CFCs.
