Flexografiikka

Flexografiikka, often shortened to flexo, is a printing process that uses a flexible relief plate to transfer ink to a substrate. This method is particularly well-suited for printing on a wide variety of materials, including plastic films, foils, paper, and cardboard, making it a dominant force in the packaging industry. The key element of flexography is the flexible printing plate, typically made of rubber or photopolymer, which has raised image areas. These raised areas hold the ink, and when pressed against the substrate, they transfer the ink to create the printed image.

The flexographic printing press operates with a series of rollers. Ink is transferred from an ink fountain to an anilox roller, which is a roller engraved with tiny cells that meter a precise amount of ink. From the anilox roller, the ink is transferred to the raised image on the printing plate, and then the plate transfers the ink to the substrate. This process can be very fast, allowing for high-volume production. Flexo printing is known for its versatility and cost-effectiveness, especially for long print runs and on flexible packaging materials. It is widely used for printing labels, flexible packaging, corrugated boxes, and paper bags. The ability to print on various surfaces, including uneven or textured ones, further contributes to its popularity.
