Flanschfinish refers to the surface condition of flange mating faces, including texture, roughness and flatness achieved during machining to ensure proper sealing and load distribution in piping and mechanical assemblies. The finish is critical for gasket performance, bolt load transfer, and long-term reliability, especially under high pressure, temperature, or corrosive service.

Flange faces are finished to specific roughness and flatness tolerances depending on the flange type and gasket material. Common flange face types include raised-face (RF), flat-face (FF), and ring-type joint (RTJ); each requires a particular surface condition to ensure effective sealing. Finishing operations typically start with rough machining (turning or milling) to achieve overall geometry, followed by grinding or lapping to improve flatness and reduce surface roughness. In high-precision or special applications, honing, polishing, or electro-polishing may be employed. Surface coatings or passivation can be used to enhance corrosion resistance, particularly on stainless steel flanges.

Standards and verification: flange finish is specified by surface roughness values, usually expressed as Ra, and by flatness and parallelism tolerances. Common practice aims for low Ra values on gasket seats, with values commonly described in micrometers, and within tight flatness tolerances to ensure uniform gasket compression. Verification methods include profilometry or flatness measurement with appropriate metrology equipment. The exact requirements depend on the flange standard (such as ASME B16.5) and the service conditions, as well as the gasket type.

Materials and maintenance: flanges are typically made from carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steels, with finish selections aligned to corrosion resistance and gasket compatibility. Regular inspection checks for surface damage, corrosion, or wear; damaged faces may require re-face or replacement to restore sealing performance.
