Finition

Finition is a term used in manufacturing, design, and construction to denote the final processing steps that determine the appearance, feel, and surface properties of a product after the main production is complete. In English, it is often translated as finishing. The concept covers decorative and protective treatments applied to a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, textiles, paper, and ceramics.

Common finishing methods include mechanical processes such as sanding, polishing, and calendaring; chemical or coating processes such as painting, staining, varnishing, lacquer, powder coating, electroplating, anodizing, and glazing; and texturing or conditioning like brushing or embossing. Some finishes enhance durability (for example, corrosion resistance or wear resistance) while others primarily affect aesthetics or tactile feel.

Finish quality is evaluated by criteria such as appearance uniformity, color consistency, gloss or sheen, surface roughness, and adhesion. Standards for measurements include roughness parameters (Ra, Rz) and coatings tests. Industry practices include proper surface preparation, adherence to environmental and safety regulations, and appropriate curing or drying times.

Finishing can influence maintenance, repairability, and life cycle cost. Environmental considerations include volatile organic compound emissions, the choice between waterborne and solvent-based systems, and waste management. In specialized sectors, termination of the process carries sector-specific terms: in woodworking, furniture finishing includes stain, sealers, and top coats; in textiles, finishing encompasses softening, heat setting, and antimicrobial treatments; in metalworking, finishing includes anodizing, plating, and passivation.
