Feedbackhomeostase is the process by which a system maintains internal stability through feedback mechanisms that monitor deviations from a setpoint and initiate responses to restore balance. The term is used in biology and systems theory to describe self-regulating processes that keep internal conditions within viable ranges.

A typical feedbackhomeostase architecture includes sensors that detect a variable, a control center that compares the value with a setpoint, and effectors that enact corrective changes. The feedback signal—neural or hormonal—closes the loop. Most homeostatic regulation relies on negative feedback, which dampens deviations; positive feedback amplifies changes and is limited to specific, transient contexts.

Common examples include body temperature regulation, where the hypothalamus integrates signals and triggers sweating or shivering; blood glucose control via insulin and glucagon; and osmotic balance managed by antidiuretic hormone and renal function. Plants also exhibit feedbackhomeostasis, adjusting stomatal opening and transpiration in response to water status.

In broader terms, allostasis describes anticipatory regulation that can adjust setpoints, while allostatic load refers to the cost of maintaining stability under stress. Engineering analogues are studied in control theory, where feedback loops aim to keep outputs within safe bounds despite disturbances.

Historically, the concept builds on Claude Bernard’s milieu intérieur and Walter Cannon’s naming of homeostasis. The compound term feedbackhomeostase emphasizes the feedback-driven nature of regulatory stability across living systems and artificial ones.
