Faulttoleranttia

Faulttoleranttia is a Finnish term used to describe systems, architectures, and practices designed to continue functioning correctly in the presence of faults or component failures. In computing and engineering, fault tolerance aims to minimize service disruption, preserve data integrity, and provide reliable operation even when individual elements fail. The concept encompasses hardware, software, networks, and organizational processes.

Key principles include redundancy, failover, graceful degradation, and rapid fault detection. Redundancy can be hardware-based (duplicate servers, power supplies, storage) or data-based (replication, erasure coding). Failover mechanisms redirect work to healthy components, while graceful degradation lets the system maintain core functions at reduced capacity.

Common approaches include active-active and active-passive configurations, hot/warm/cold standby, and periodic checkpointing and logging. Distributed systems rely on consensus and replication (for example Paxos or Raft) to maintain agreement in the presence of faults. Clients may experience eventual consistency, while critical data often uses strong consistency guarantees and durable storage.

Fault tolerance is essential in cloud services, databases, storage systems, and critical infrastructure such as air traffic control and automotive systems.
