Farbtiming

Farbtiming is the professional process of adjusting the color and brightness of moving images to achieve a specific visual appearance and to ensure consistency across scenes. The term blends the idea of color management with the concept of timing, reflecting its roots in film production where dye densities and exposure were controlled during printing; in contemporary practice it largely refers to digital color grading.

In post-production, a colorist analyzes footage shot under varying lighting and exposure and uses color-grading software to refine the image. Primary corrections address global balance, contrast, saturation, white balance, and exposure using color wheels or curves. Secondary corrections target specific colors or regions to correct skin tones, skies, or other elements without affecting the entire frame. The process also includes matching shots across a sequence, compensating for different cameras, lenses, and lighting, and establishing a consistent color space and gamma for delivery.

The outcome, or look, is shaped through collaboration among the director, cinematographer, and colorist. Deliverables typically include a color-graded master and renders prepared for various platforms, with attention to target delivery standards such as Rec.709, DCI-P3, or HDR formats. Historically, “color timing” referred to the film-lab process of adjusting dye densities during printing; in digital workflows it remains closely related but emphasizes the artistic and technical balancing required to realize a film’s or show’s intended mood and realism.
