FancyZones

FancyZones is a window management utility developed by Microsoft as part of the PowerToys suite. It allows users to create complex window layouts on their desktop and then easily snap application windows into these predefined zones. This functionality aims to improve productivity by enabling users to organize their workspace more efficiently, especially on high-resolution displays or when working with multiple applications simultaneously.

The core feature of FancyZones is its customizable zone editor. Users can define distinct areas, or "zones," on their screen by dragging and resizing them. These zones can be arranged in various configurations, from simple grids to more intricate arrangements. Once a layout is created, users can hold down a designated modifier key (typically the Shift key) while dragging a window. As the window is dragged, the defined zones will appear, and releasing the window within a zone will automatically resize and position it to fill that area.

FancyZones offers several predefined templates for common layouts, such as columns, rows, and grids, which can be a starting point for customization. Users can also create and save their own custom layouts. The utility integrates with the Windows operating system, allowing for seamless window snapping that feels native. It also supports multiple monitors, enabling users to set up different zone layouts on each display.
