Familjeärenden

Familjeärenden is a Swedish term used to describe cases handled by public authorities that concern families and children. The category is most commonly applied within social services and family law and covers matters where the welfare, safety, or rights of a family member are at stake.

Common areas include child welfare investigations, custody and visitation disputes, adoption and guardianship, and arrangements for family support such as housing or financial assistance. The term also covers protection against domestic violence and other situations where a family needs protective or supportive measures. In some contexts it includes care arrangements for relatives or dependents who require assistance.

Process typically starts with an intake by social services or a court. Social services assess needs and risks under the Socialtjänstlagen (SoL). Depending on the case, services may be provided voluntarily or, in more serious situations, formal protective actions under LVU or other statutes. Parental decisions or custody matters may be decided by the district court, while welfare-related decisions are often subject to administrative or judicial review.

Legal framework and actors include SoL; LVU for care of young persons; Föräldrabalken (Parental Code) governing parental responsibility and custody; and principles drawn from Barnkonventionen (the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). Municipal social services staff, guardians ad litem, and the courts, along with law enforcement in certain cases, participate in family matters. The overarching aim is to safeguard the best interests of the child and other vulnerable family members.

Outcomes and safeguards emphasize voluntary support and family involvement, with coercive measures used only when necessary and legally authorised. Individuals have rights to information, participation, and appeal of decisions.
