The term "Fachlehrerin" directly translates to "subject teacher" and is used in contrast to "Klassenlehrerin" (class teacher).

The role of a Fachlehrerin typically begins in secondary education, such as at a Realschule, Gymnasium, or Gesamtschule. They are trained in their specific subject area, often holding a university degree in that discipline, followed by pedagogical training and a practical traineeship (Referendariat).
