FT232RFT231X

The FT232R and FT231X are USB-to-serial converter integrated circuits manufactured by FTDI (Future Technology Devices International). They are designed to provide a simple and efficient way to interface legacy serial devices with modern USB ports. The FT232R is a more established and versatile chip, while the FT231X is a more cost-effective variant often used in simpler applications.

Both chips translate Universal Serial Bus (USB) data to and from asynchronous serial interface (UART) signals. This allows devices with serial communication ports, such as microcontrollers, sensors, and older peripherals, to be connected to computers or other USB-enabled hosts. They support various standard baud rates, data bits, parity bits, and stop bits, making them highly configurable for different serial protocols.

The FT232R offers additional features like a Bit-Bang mode, which allows direct control of the data lines as general-purpose I/O pins, and an internal EEPROM for storing custom configurations, device descriptors, and vendor-specific information. The FT231X generally omits some of these advanced features to reduce cost, focusing on the core USB-to-serial conversion functionality.

FTDI provides royalty-free drivers for Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, simplifying integration into existing systems. These drivers create virtual COM ports on the host system, allowing software applications to communicate with the serial device as if it were directly connected via a traditional serial port. This ease of use and broad operating system support has made FTDI chips popular in prototyping, embedded systems, and industrial applications.
