FEProjekte

FEProjekte is a term used to describe a portfolio-based approach to Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte (R&D projects) that are managed under a unified governance and funding framework. The concept is applied primarily in German-speaking regions and in organizations that aim to coordinate multiple research initiatives to improve strategic alignment, resource use, and knowledge transfer.

Scope and structure: A FEProjekte portfolio typically comprises several concurrent projects with related objectives, shared milestones, and common reporting requirements. It commonly involves collaboration among industry partners, universities or research institutes, and public funding agencies. A central program management office coordinates prioritization, risk management, and inter-project dependencies.

Process and lifecycle: Projects within a FEProjekte portfolio follow a staged lifecycle, often including ideation, feasibility assessment, concept development, prototype or demonstrator work, validation, and deployment. Stage-gate reviews and steering committee decisions are used to authorize progression and reallocate resources as needed.

Funding, evaluation, and impact: Financing may come from public grants, industry contributions, or a mix. Evaluations focus on technical progress, economic viability, and social or environmental implications. Success indicators include demonstrated performance, transfer of knowledge, patent activity, cost reductions, and scale-up or market adoption.

Criticism and use: While the FEProjekte framework can reduce duplication and improve alignment with policy goals, it may introduce administrative overhead and stifle experimentation if not implemented with flexibility and clear outcomes. It is used across sectors such as energy, manufacturing, information technology, and materials science.
