A Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system is an advanced electronic engine management system used primarily in modern aircraft, marine, and industrial gas turbine applications. Unlike traditional mechanical or hydraulic control systems, FADEC relies on digital electronics to monitor and regulate engine parameters in real time. This technology enhances performance, reliability, and safety while reducing maintenance requirements.

In aviation, FADEC systems are widely adopted in both commercial and military aircraft, including single-engine general aviation planes and large multi-engine jets. The system continuously adjusts fuel flow, ignition timing, and other critical parameters based on inputs from sensors such as temperature, pressure, and rotational speed. By optimizing engine performance across varying conditions, FADEC improves fuel efficiency, reduces emissions, and minimizes wear and tear.

Key components of a FADEC system include sensors, an electronic control unit (ECU), actuators, and software algorithms. Sensors collect data on engine conditions, which the ECU processes using pre-programmed logic to determine the best operational settings. Actuators then implement these adjustments, such as controlling fuel injectors or variable geometry components. Redundancy is often built into the system to ensure fail-safe operation, with backup units or manual overrides available in case of primary failure.

FADEC systems have also found applications in marine engines and industrial turbines, where they provide similar benefits in terms of efficiency and control. While initial implementation costs can be higher than traditional systems, the long-term advantages in performance, maintenance savings, and environmental impact make FADEC a preferred choice for modern engine management.
