F30

F30 is the internal chassis designation used by BMW for the fourth generation of the 3 Series sedan, the four-door variant of the F generation. Introduced in 2012 and produced until 2019, the F30 belongs to a family that also includes the related F31 wagon, F32 coupe, F33 convertible, and F34 Gran Turismo. The sedan served as the primary representation of the generation and offered rear-wheel drive as standard with optional all-wheel drive (xDrive).

The F30 platform was designed to be lighter and more rigid than its predecessor, while improving interior space and efficiency. It supported a range of turbocharged powertrains, including four-cylinder petrol engines such as the 2.0-liter units and six-cylinder configurations in higher-spec variants. Diesel options were also offered in several markets. Transmission choices typically included a manual and an eight-speed automatic, with the automatic widely adopted across markets. Performance versions in the same generation included high-output variants of the inline-six engines and, later, the availability of the turbocharged six in sportier models.

A mid-cycle refresh around 2015–2016, known as a life-cycle impulse (LCI), updated styling, headlights, and interior technology, and introduced refinements to powertrains and emissions performance. The F30 platform is notable for contributing to the 3 Series’ reputation for a balanced handling mix and refined ride quality within a compact executive car segment.

The F30 generation was succeeded by the G20/G21 3 Series in 2019, continuing BMW’s strategy of offering sport-oriented midsize sedans with broad engine choices and optional all-wheel drive.
