The concept arose in alternative and humanistic therapeutic circles and has been promoted as a means to address trauma, anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms. Supporters emphasize experiential engagement and personal agency, while critics note that expulsjonsterapi lacks widespread acceptance in mainstream clinical psychology and psychiatry and that its theorization varies considerably between practitioners.

Typical methods may include rhythmic or deep breathing, controlled exhales or vocalizing, physical shaking or releasing movements, body-focused awareness, and guided imagery.
