EuroPaletten

EuroPaletten, commonly referred to as EUR-pallets or EPAL pallets, are standardized wooden pallets used extensively in European logistics to enable efficient handling and intermodal transport. The standardization allows pallets to move between different transport modes and across borders with consistent load capacity and interchangeability.

The most common size is 800 by 1200 millimeters, with a typical height around 144 millimeters and a gross weight in the range of 20 to 25 kilograms. The pallets are designed for forklift or pallet jack handling and are usually four-way entry, enabling lifting from all sides. They are built from softwood such as spruce or pine, using a defined construction pattern that includes stringers and a deck on top and bottom, providing a robust platform for loads. The European Pallet Association (EPAL) licenses manufacturers to produce pallets to this standard and stamps each pallet with the EPAL mark, along with a country code and year of manufacture, to indicate conformity.

Repair and reconditioning are common practices to extend pallet life. EPAL-certified facilities assess and repair damaged pallets to restore interchangeability; repaired pallets that meet standards can be re-stamped. The system is designed to promote safety, durability, and traceability.

EuroPaletten are widely used across Europe and in international trade, with millions in circulation. They are supported by logistics networks, shipping lines, and warehouse systems that accommodate standardized pallets, contributing to efficiency, compatibility, and a circular economy in pallet reuse and recycling.
