Etupesukoneet

Etupesukoneet, or front-loading washing machines, wash clothes by tumbling them in a horizontally oriented drum accessed through a front door. The drum sits inside a water-tight seal to prevent leaks. Compared with top-loading models, etupesukoneet typically use less water and detergent and achieve higher spin speeds.

Typical capacities range from about 5 to 12 kilograms of dry laundry, with some models reaching 14 kg. Spin speeds commonly reach 1000–1600 revolutions per minute, enabling more thorough moisture extraction. They are available as freestanding units or built-in and are often stackable with a dryer.

Operation involves loading through the front door, selecting wash programs, and adding detergent and fabric softener in a drawer. Modern machines use high-efficiency detergents and controlled cycles to optimize energy, water, and time. Many models include options such as steam, variable drum action, or auto-dose.

Safety and maintenance: The front gasket can mold if the door is kept closed after cycles; regular cleaning and leaving the door slightly ajar helps. A pump filter is typically accessible for periodic cleaning. Common safety features include child locks and door interlocks.

History and prevalence: Front-loading washers gained widespread adoption in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, with brands such as Miele, Bosch, and Siemens contributing to development. Today they are common worldwide and are often paired with tumble dryers or ventless drying options.
