Etukäyttöliittymä, often abbreviated as GUI (Graphical User Interface), refers to a visual way for users to interact with electronic devices. Instead of typing text commands, users manipulate graphical elements like icons, windows, and buttons using input devices such as a mouse or touchscreen. This intuitive approach simplifies computer operation, making it accessible to a wider audience.

The concept of a GUI emerged to overcome the limitations of command-line interfaces (CLIs), where users had to memorize and type specific commands. Early GUIs, like those developed at Xerox PARC, laid the groundwork for modern operating systems. Apple's Macintosh, released in 1984, popularized the GUI for personal computers, and Microsoft's Windows operating system followed suit, becoming the dominant GUI on the market.

Key components of a GUI include windows, which display information and applications; icons, representing files, folders, or applications; menus, offering lists of commands or options; and pointers, controlled by input devices to select and interact with elements. GUIs are now ubiquitous, found not only in computers but also in smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and many other electronic devices, significantly enhancing user experience and ease of use.
