Eteisfibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, commonly abbreviated as AFib or eteisfibrillation (a less common term), is a common cardiac arrhythmia characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm. The term "eteisfibrillation" is not a standard medical designation but may occasionally appear in non-English or regional contexts as a phonetic approximation of "atrial fibrillation." Clinically, the condition refers to chaotic electrical impulses in the heart’s upper chambers (atria), causing them to contract ineffectively rather than in a coordinated manner.

Symptoms of atrial fibrillation can vary widely among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. Common manifestations include palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and chest discomfort. Some people may experience no symptoms at all, particularly in the early stages or during paroxysmal (intermittent) episodes. Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include advancing age, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, and a family history of the condition.

Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which records the heart’s electrical activity and reveals the irregular rhythm characteristic of atrial fibrillation. Additional tests, such as Holter monitors or echocardiograms, may be used to assess the heart’s structure and function. Treatment aims to control the heart rate, restore normal rhythm, prevent blood clots (which can lead to stroke), and address underlying causes.

Management often includes lifestyle modifications, such as reducing alcohol intake, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing chronic conditions like hypertension. Medications such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, or antiarrhythmics may be prescribed to regulate the heart rate or rhythm. In some cases, procedures like cardioversion (electrical or chemical), catheter ablation, or implantation of a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) may be necessary. Long-term anticoagulation therapy, such as with warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), is often recommended to reduce the risk of stroke in high-risk patients. Regular monitoring and follow-up with a healthcare provider are essential for managing atrial fibrillation effectively.
