Esihuuhtelun

Esihuuhtelun is a Finnish term that refers to the pre-rinse step in cleaning, most often associated with dishwashing. It involves removing loose soil, food particles, and other residues from dishes, utensils, or surfaces before the main washing phase. The aim is to improve cleaning efficiency and reduce soil buildup in the subsequent wash.

In practice, esihuuhtelun can be performed manually with running water and a spray or faucet, or as a dedicated program in a dishwasher or industrial cleaning system. Typical parameters include a relatively high water flow and warm temperatures, usually around 40–60°C, to loosen rather than dissolve stubborn residues. In industrial settings, pre-rinse may be a brief, high-flow cycle followed by the main wash.

Esihuuhtelun is used in both household and professional contexts. In homes, some dishwashers offer a pre-rinse or quick-wash option, while heavier soils are often managed by pre-rinsing manually before loading. In commercial kitchens and manufacturing, a formal pre-rinse step can be part of a larger cleaning protocol to prepare items for the main cleaning and sanitizing stages.
