Erillisjousitusjärjestelmissä, commonly translated as independent suspension systems, refers to a type of automotive suspension design where each wheel on an axle is allowed to move vertically independently of the other. This contrasts with a solid axle or live axle system, where the wheels are rigidly connected and a movement on one side directly affects the other. The primary benefit of independent suspension is improved ride quality and handling.

In an independent suspension system, each wheel is attached to its own control arms or linkages, which are then connected to the vehicle's chassis. This setup allows a wheel to absorb bumps and road irregularities without significantly disturbing the opposite wheel. Consequently, the tire maintains better contact with the road surface, leading to improved traction, stability, and a smoother ride for occupants.

There are various types of independent suspension systems, each with its own specific design and characteristics. Common examples include MacPherson struts, double wishbone suspension, and trailing arm suspension. MacPherson struts are widely used due to their simplicity and compact design, integrating the shock absorber and spring into a single strut assembly. Double wishbone systems, employing two A-shaped arms, offer excellent control over wheel movement and are often found in performance vehicles. Trailing arm suspension is another configuration where the suspension arm is pivoted near the center of the vehicle.

The choice of independent suspension system for a vehicle depends on factors such as cost, performance requirements, packaging constraints, and desired ride comfort.
