Epäkudottuja

Epäkudottuja is a Finnish adjective meaning “not woven” and is used primarily in textile-related contexts to describe fabrics, fibers, or sheets that have not been produced by the weaving process. It serves to differentiate these materials from kudottuja, which refers to woven textiles created by interlacing threads. Epäkudottuja materials commonly include felts and nonwoven fabrics, which are produced by bonding, felting, or other non-weaving methods, as well as bonded fiber sheets and similar nonwoven structures. The term is common in technical descriptions, product specifications, and archaeological reports dealing with textile residues.

In Finnish grammar, epäkudottuja is the plural partitive form of epäkudottu, used to modify nouns in contexts such as epäkudottuja kankaita (unwashed? yes, nonwoven fabrics) or epäkudottuja kuituja (unwoven fibers). The singular form is epäkudottu when describing a single nonwoven item, such as epäkudottu kangas (a nonwoven fabric). The word is predominantly found in specialist texts; in everyday language speakers more often use phrases like ei kudottu or ei kudottuja kankaita to convey the same idea.
