Epitopillosis

Epitopillosis is a rare, benign skin condition characterized by the development of small, dome-shaped papules, often with a central pore or umbilication. These papules are typically flesh-colored or slightly pink and can appear individually or in clusters. The term "epitopillosis" is derived from "epithelium," referring to the type of tissue involved, and "pilosus," meaning hairy or covered with hair, though hair is not a defining feature of the condition.

The exact cause of epitopillosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to abnormal proliferation of epidermal cells. It can occur in individuals of any age, though it is sometimes observed in children and young adults. There is no known genetic predisposition or specific environmental trigger associated with its development.

Clinically, epitopillosis presents as asymptomatic or mildly itchy lesions. They can occur on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, trunk, and extremities. Histologically, epitopillosis shows a benign proliferation of epidermal cells, often with a central invagination or cystic structure.

Diagnosis is typically made through visual inspection and, if necessary, a skin biopsy to rule out other similar-appearing conditions. Epitopillosis is considered a harmless condition and usually does not require treatment. However, if the lesions are cosmetically bothersome or cause discomfort, they can be removed through simple surgical excision, cryotherapy, or electrocautery. Recurrence is uncommon after complete removal.
