Epiduraalanesteetikume, also known as epidural anesthetics, are a class of local anesthetic drugs used to achieve pain relief and anesthesia in a specific region of the body, most commonly the lower half. They are administered into the epidural space, a region located just outside the dura mater, the outermost membrane surrounding the spinal cord. This allows the anesthetic to block nerve signals as they exit or enter the spinal cord.

The primary use of epidural anesthetics is in obstetrics for pain management during labor and delivery. They are also widely employed in surgical procedures, particularly those involving the abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities, providing anesthesia and post-operative pain control. The effect of the anesthetic is a temporary loss of sensation and motor function in the targeted area, with the duration and intensity depending on the specific drug, dosage, and concentration used.

Commonly used epidural anesthetics include lidocaine, bupivacaine, and ropivacaine. These drugs work by preventing the transmission of nerve impulses by reversibly blocking sodium channels in nerve cell membranes. Side effects can occur, though they are generally managed and often temporary. These may include a drop in blood pressure, itching, nausea, and difficulty urinating. Serious complications are rare but can include headache, nerve damage, or infection. The administration requires a trained medical professional, typically an anesthesiologist.
