Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in populations, and the application of this study to the prevention and control of health problems. The field aims to describe patterns of disease, identify risk factors, and inform public health policy and practice.

Modern epidemiology began in the 19th century with systematic data collection and analysis. Pioneers such as John Snow, who linked a cholera outbreak to contaminated water, and William Farr, who advanced population-based data, helped establish methods for studying disease in communities. Since then, epidemiology has grown to encompass a wide range of health conditions and settings.

Epidemiological research combines descriptive studies that characterize who is affected, where, and when, with analytic studies that test hypotheses about determinants. Study designs include cohort studies, case-control studies, and cross-sectional studies, as well as experimental designs such as randomized controlled trials. Researchers consider issues of bias, confounding, and causality when interpreting results. Key measures used in epidemiology include incidence (new cases over time), prevalence (existing cases at a point or period), mortality rates, relative risk, odds ratios, and attributable risks.

Applications of epidemiology include public health surveillance, outbreak investigation, screening and prevention programs, assessment of interventions, and informing health policy. Subfields cover infectious disease epidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, social epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, and occupational health epidemiology.

Data sources range from vital statistics and disease registries to population surveys and electronic health records. Ethical considerations include privacy, informed consent, and equitable use of data. By translating data into risk assessments and preventative strategies, epidemiology supports evidence-based medicine and population health.
