Entendue

Entendue (plural entendus) is a French term meaning "understood" or "agreement". In classical usage it refers to a musical arrangement or a specific approach to performing a composition that is widely recognized within a particular style or era. The term arose in medieval music theory to describe a fact or idea an audience is presumed to accept; it later entered modern musical lexicon as a shorthand for repertoire that can be comfortably performed with minimal rehearsal by musicians familiar with its conventions.

In performance practice, an entendue often points to a pastiche or variation on a well-known theme, allowing a performer to integrate the material effortlessly. It may also denote the use of standard cadential harmonies, melodic cadences, or rhythmic patterns that are characteristic of a genre. For example, a baritone might render an entendue of a Bach chorale by employing the typical melodic line and harmonic progression that listeners expect, ensuring the work feels authentic and accessible.

The concept is useful in pedagogy and repertoire management. Teachers can use entendus to introduce students to stylistic norms without the need for memorization of complex works. Catalogues of music, database tags, and academic literature on performance practice sometimes employ the term to indicate the degree of familiarity required for a piece.

Though less common today, the entende remains a valuable descriptor in music criticism, historical performance guides, and discussions of stylistic authenticity.
