Enkais are social gatherings in Japanese culture centered on informal drinking after work. The term, from the kanji for “banquet” and “meeting,” denotes a group-oriented event designed to strengthen interpersonal ties among participants, often organized by a company, department, club, or association. While originally rooted in business contexts, enkai can occur in schools, civic groups, and voluntary organizations as well.
