Enamelers

Enamelers are skilled craftspeople who apply enamel to metal surfaces. Enameling is a decorative technique involving the fusing of glass powder to metal at high temperatures. This process creates a durable and often colorful coating. Enamelers work with a variety of metals, including gold, silver, copper, and steel, depending on the intended application and desired aesthetic.

The process begins with the preparation of the metal substrate, which must be clean and free of impurities. The enamel, which is essentially finely ground glass mixed with metallic oxides to achieve specific colors, is then applied. Various application techniques exist, such as dry application, wet packing, and painting with liquid enamel. Once applied, the piece is fired in a kiln or with a torch. The high heat melts the enamel, causing it to fuse with the metal and harden into a smooth, glassy finish. This firing process may need to be repeated multiple times for layered designs or to achieve a desired effect.

Enamelers utilize a range of tools, including brushes, spatulas, and specialized kilns. The specific tools and techniques employed depend on the type of enameling being performed, such as cloisonné, champlevé, or basse-taille. These different methods involve varying ways of creating cells or designs into which the enamel is applied.
