Emulsiopolymeroinnissa, also known as emulsion polymerization, is a versatile technique used in polymer chemistry to synthesize polymers. This process involves the polymerization of monomers within an aqueous medium, where the monomers are dispersed as droplets stabilized by a surfactant. The polymerization typically occurs within micelles formed by the surfactant. The presence of water as the continuous phase helps to dissipate heat, making it a suitable method for producing polymers with high molecular weights and controlling reaction exothermicity.

The process begins with the dispersion of water-insoluble or sparingly soluble monomers in water, often with the aid of a mechanical stirrer and a surfactant. A water-soluble initiator is then added, which decomposes upon heating to generate free radicals. These radicals enter the monomer-swollen micelles, initiating the polymerization. As polymerization proceeds, the growing polymer chains remain within the micelles, which gradually grow in size and eventually transform into polymer particles.

Emulsion polymerization offers several advantages, including good control over particle size and distribution, high polymerization rates, and the ability to produce high molecular weight polymers. The resulting polymer latex, a stable dispersion of polymer particles in water, can be used directly in applications such as paints, adhesives, and coatings, or the polymer can be isolated by coagulation. Common polymers produced via emulsion polymerization include polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene, and various acrylic polymers.
