Emissiivisissä, also known as emissive displays or emissive technology, refers to a type of visual display that generates its own light rather than relying on ambient light for illumination. Unlike non-emissive displays, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) or projection screens, emissive screens produce light through internal mechanisms, resulting in brighter and more vibrant images without the need for a backlight.

The most common type of emissive display is the organic light-emitting diode (OLED), which uses organic compounds that emit light when an electric current is applied. OLED technology is known for its thin, flexible, and energy-efficient properties, as well as its ability to achieve deep blacks and high contrast ratios. Another form of emissive display is the quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED), which incorporates quantum dots to enhance color accuracy and brightness, though it typically requires a backlight similar to traditional LCDs.

Emissive displays are favored in applications where high performance, thin form factors, and superior image quality are essential. They are widely used in consumer electronics, including smartphones, televisions, and monitors, as well as in professional and industrial settings. However, emissive technologies can also have drawbacks, such as potential burn-in issues in OLEDs, where static images may leave permanent marks on the screen over time, and higher production costs compared to non-emissive alternatives.

The development of emissive display technology continues to advance, with ongoing research focused on improving efficiency, longevity, and color reproduction. Innovations in materials science and manufacturing processes aim to address existing limitations while expanding the applications of emissive screens in emerging technologies, such as wearable devices and augmented reality systems.
