Embeddingsrepresentation is the concept of representing discrete or high-dimensional data items as dense, continuous vectors in a shared embedding space. The goal is to encode semantic, syntactic, or relational patterns so that similar items are nearby in the space. This approach underpins many machine learning tasks by providing compact, differentiable representations that can be fed into models and refined during training.

Common forms include word embeddings, sentence embeddings, document embeddings, and graph or node embeddings. Word embeddings map individual tokens to vectors, while sentence and document embeddings aim to summarize larger text units. Graph embeddings represent nodes and relationships in networks. Vectors are typically learned from data and updated during task-specific training, with careful choices of dimension, normalization, and similarity metrics.

Learning methods range from classical count-based approaches like latent semantic analysis and matrix factorization to predictive methods such as skip-gram and continuous bag-of-words, exemplified by word2vec and GloVe. More recently, contextual embeddings produced by models like ELMo, BERT, and GPT generate vectors that vary with context. Training objectives often optimize prediction of neighboring items or masked tokens, and embeddings are usually high-dimensional and normalized. Similarity is commonly measured using cosine distance or related metrics.

Applications span information retrieval, semantic search, clustering, recommendation, transfer learning, and knowledge graph completion. Challenges include polysemy and domain adaptation, bias in learned representations, interpretability, and computational efficiency for large-scale models. The field is evolving toward multimodal embeddings, cross-lingual alignment, and more robust evaluation frameworks that balance intrinsic embedding quality with downstream task performance.
