Elämänkerrallisuus, sometimes translated as "biographism" or "biographical fallacy," is a critical approach to interpreting art, literature, or other creative works by focusing primarily on the artist's or creator's life and personal experiences. This perspective suggests that the meaning of a work is intrinsically tied to the biographical context of its creation. Proponents of elämänkerrallisuus believe that understanding the artist's background, motivations, and life events is essential for a complete and accurate interpretation of their output.

This approach can lead to valuable insights, as personal experiences often do inform creative expression. For instance, a poet's experiences with loss might be seen as directly reflected in their elegies, or a painter's political beliefs might be interpreted as the driving force behind their socially charged canvases. However, elämänkerrallisuus has also faced significant criticism. Critics argue that it can overly simplify complex works by reducing them to mere autobiographical accounts, potentially ignoring the aesthetic qualities, universal themes, or innovative techniques employed by the artist. Furthermore, it can lead to speculation and unverified assumptions about the artist's intentions, blurring the lines between fact and interpretation.
