Elottomuus

Elottomuus is the state or quality of being lifeless or without life. In Finnish, it denotes the absence of life processes in objects, organisms, or phenomena that would otherwise be able to live or move autonomously. The term is formed from the adjective eloton, meaning lifeless, with the abstract noun suffix -uus.

In everyday language elottomuus describes inanimate objects such as rocks, machines, or furniture. In scientific contexts it refers to inanimate matter, as opposed to living beings. Physically, inanimate matter can consist of atoms and molecules that do not carry out biological life processes, but it can still participate in physical and chemical interactions.
