Ellenvetését, also known as *fear of rejection* or *rejection sensitivity*, refers to an excessive and often irrational fear of being rejected, dismissed, or excluded by others. This psychological phenomenon can manifest in various social, professional, and personal contexts, influencing behavior, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. While some level of concern about rejection is normal, ellenvetését becomes problematic when it leads to avoidance behaviors, heightened anxiety, or persistent distress.

The origins of ellenvetését can stem from early childhood experiences, such as inconsistent parental attention, bullying, or social exclusion. Over time, these experiences may shape an individual’s perception of themselves as unworthy or undesirable, reinforcing a heightened sensitivity to potential rejection. Research suggests that people with ellenvetését often exhibit heightened physiological responses—such as increased heart rate or cortisol levels—when anticipating social evaluation or criticism.

Symptoms of ellenvetését may include excessive people-pleasing, social withdrawal, overanalyzing social interactions, or assuming negative intentions in others’ behavior. While ellenvetését is not officially classified as a distinct mental health disorder in diagnostic manuals like the DSM-5, it is recognized as a significant factor in social anxiety and interpersonal difficulties. Understanding and managing ellenvetését can improve emotional well-being and foster healthier relationships. Strategies such as setting realistic expectations, practicing self-compassion, and gradually exposing oneself to social situations can help mitigate its effects.
