Eliminierung

Eliminierung is a German noun meaning the act of removing, excluding, or eradicating something from a set, system, or process. The term is used across disciplines to denote making something disappear or no longer relevant, often by substituting, removing elements, or excluding from consideration. Etymologically, Eliminierung derives from Latin eliminare and entered German via French and other routes, bearing the sense of drawing something out or driving it away.

In mathematics and computer science, Eliminierung refers to procedures that remove or eliminate elements to simplify a problem. The best-known example is Gaussian elimination, a method to solve systems of linear equations by transforming the coefficient matrix to a simpler form. In logic, elimination rules (Eliminierung) allow deriving conclusions by removing a connective or a quantifier, such as conjunction elimination, disjunction elimination, or existential elimination. In probabilistic reasoning, variable elimination algorithms are used to simplify computations in graphical models such as Bayesian networks.

In organic chemistry, Eliminierungsreaktionen involve the removal of two substituents from a molecule to form a multiple bond, typically a hydrogen atom and a leaving group. Common mechanisms are E1 and E2. The concept extends to related fields in chemistry where functional groups are removed as part of a reaction sequence, often altering the degree of unsaturation or connectivity.

Beyond the lab, Eliminierung appears in statistics and data processing as the exclusion of data points or variables from analysis, and in biology and modeling as the removal of components from a system. Historically, the term has also been used as a euphemism for extermination in German, most notoriously in the Nazi era, a usage that underscores the term’s grave ethical implications.
