Elektronrörelsen

Elektronrörelsen, often translated as electron movement or electron flow, refers to the motion of electrons within a material. This movement is fundamental to the phenomenon of electric current. In conductive materials, such as metals, electrons in the outer atomic shells, known as valence electrons, are loosely bound and can move relatively freely. When an electric potential difference, or voltage, is applied across such a material, these free electrons are compelled to move in a directed manner. This organized flow of electrons constitutes an electric current.

The direction of conventional current is defined as the direction of positive charge flow, which is opposite to the actual direction of electron movement. This convention originated before the discovery of the electron. Electrons themselves carry a negative charge, so they are repelled by the negative terminal of a voltage source and attracted to the positive terminal. Therefore, in a simple circuit, electrons flow from the negative terminal, through the conductor, and to the positive terminal.

The speed at which electrons move is significantly slower than the speed of the electric signal itself. This is because electrons are constantly colliding with atoms within the material, a process that impedes their net movement and contributes to electrical resistance. The average drift velocity of electrons is quite low, on the order of millimeters per second, while the electric field that drives them propagates at near the speed of light.
