It is typically encountered as an adjective phrase (electronic-triggered) to characterize subsystems that rely on sensors, logic, and timing to generate a trigger.

In practice, electronic triggering works by monitoring a signal from a sensor or circuit and comparing it to predefined conditions. When the conditions are met—such as a voltage crossing a threshold, a specific edge transition, or a timed pulse—the system emits a trigger output that starts, gates, or synchronizes another process. Trigger conditions can be level-triggered, edge-triggered, or pulse-width modulated, and the resulting trigger can control timing, data capture, or actuator activation.

Applications of electronic triggering are widespread. In instrumentation and data acquisition, electronic triggering coordinates oscilloscope displays and sample collection to align with reference signals. In photography, video, and automation, triggers initiate exposures, flashes, or coordinated actions by controllers, PLCs, or microcontrollers. In some firearm and airsoft contexts, electronic triggers are used to provide programmable or computer-managed firing control, though such implementations are subject to strict safety and legal considerations.

Advantages of electronic triggering include precision, repeatability, programmability, and reduced mechanical wear. Limitations involve sensitivity to noise and electromagnetic interference, potential for false triggering, power dependence, and the need for robust circuit design and shielding.
