Electromyostimulation

Electromyostimulation, often abbreviated as EMS, is a process that uses electrical impulses to cause muscle contractions. These impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes placed on the skin over the targeted muscle groups. The electrical current mimics the action potential coming from the central nervous system, causing the muscle to contract. EMS can be used for a variety of purposes, including rehabilitation, muscle strengthening, and pain relief.

In rehabilitation settings, EMS is frequently employed to help patients regain muscle function after injury or surgery. By stimulating muscles that may be difficult to activate voluntarily, EMS can help prevent atrophy and improve blood circulation, aiding in the healing process. This application is often referred to as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), a related but distinct modality that focuses specifically on pain relief.
