The concept aims to account for time-dependent changes in stiffness, damping, and dimensional stability that cannot be fully explained by classical viscoelastic models alone.

The hypothesized mechanisms include slow reorganization of network chains, microvoid formation and healing, irreversible alignment of chains or fillers under strain, and partial cross-link adjustment at the microscale. This leads to evolving mechanical properties such as modulus reduction or recovery behavior over time, as well as hysteresis that may change with conditioning time or temperature.

Researchers often study related phenomena using aging experiments, creep and recovery tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and microstructural imaging to capture time-dependent changes.
