Elastohydrodynamical

Elastohydrodynamical refers to a regime of lubrication where both the elastic deformation of the solid surfaces and the hydrodynamic pressure of the lubricant play significant roles in the lubrication process. This phenomenon is particularly important in situations involving highly loaded, relatively slow-moving surfaces, such as in rolling element bearings, gears, and cams.

In elastohydrodynamical lubrication, the lubricant film is extremely thin, often on the order of the wavelength of visible light. The high pressures generated within this thin film cause the elastic deformation of the contacting surfaces. This deformation, in turn, influences the shape of the converging gap through which the lubricant flows. The lubricant's viscosity also increases significantly under these high pressures, which further contributes to the generation of a load-carrying film pressure.

The interplay between elastic deformation and hydrodynamic pressure is crucial for preventing direct metal-to-metal contact and minimizing wear. Without this elastohydrodynamical effect, the lubricant film would be insufficient to support the applied loads, leading to significant friction and surface damage. Understanding and predicting elastohydrodynamical behavior is vital for designing efficient and durable mechanical components that operate under high stress conditions.
