Eisbahn

An Eisbahn, or ice rink, is a dedicated surface of ice used for skating and ice-based sports. It can be outdoor or indoor. Outdoor Eisbahnen may rely on natural ice formed by cold winter temperatures, or on artificially produced ice created with refrigeration systems when weather is insufficient. Indoor Eisbahnen are climate-controlled facilities that keep a consistent ice surface through artificial cooling, allowing skating to take place year-round or during seasons with milder weather. Ice is maintained by regular resurfacing, typically with a motorized machine such as a Zamboni, which shaves the rough surface and lays down a thin layer of fresh water.

Sizes and layouts vary by purpose. Public skating rinks tend to be rectangular and smaller than professional venues, while ice hockey arenas follow standardized dimensions (international standards around 60 by 30 meters; North American rink sizes differ). Figure skating and speed skating venues use appropriate markings and lanes. Some facilities are multipurpose, enabling hockey, skating, and occasional events. In addition, curling sheets may be located in some arenas or separate venues.

Historically, Eisbahnen have played a central role in winter recreation in German-speaking regions. Outdoor rinks were common in towns and markets as seasonal attractions, while modern cities increasingly rely on indoor rinks to support sport, training, and public skating throughout the year.
